Announcements

• Member Announcements:
  • Gabriel Hamer left his position at the Newberry library and resigned from the committee.
  • Shelby Strommer resigned from the committee.
  • Brad Wiles (Northern Illinois University):
    • Northern Illinois University opened Book Lab – a classroom/makerspace that focuses on the history of print technology and there may be future opportunities for preservation events.
    • Northern Illinois University lost three NEH grants, including one funding Digital POWRR.
  • Bonnie Parr (Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum): She is celebrating her 40th work anniversary at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
• CARLI Announcements:
  • CARLI co-hosted ICOLC conference in Chicago last week.
  • Save the date announcement: CARLI’s annual meeting will be on October 21st and the group is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The committee volunteer cycle accepted applications through May 2nd and is in the process of accepting new volunteers. More information forthcoming. Heidi and Bonnie are rolling off the committee, and Shelby and Gabriel recently left the committee.

• Past programming:
  • Shelby and Gabriel presented the Preservation Crafts “Snakes in the Library” webinar held on April 9th. 106 people registered. The video is posted on the CARLI website: Snakes in the Library! Book Snakes and Other Preservation-Related Crafts for Library Outreach.
  • Bradley help arrange the InterPARES Trust at AI Symposium webinar held on April 15th. There were over 300 registrants for the symposium. The video is posted on the CARLI website: AI Symposium: Presentation 5: the Preservation of Trustworthy Digital Records: 25 Years of InterPARES Research.
  • Bonnie and Patti staffed the “Ask an Expert” preservation webinar session on May 1st. 15 people registered.
• Upcoming programing:
  • IFSI Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop, June 9.
    • CARLI will work with surplus for shelving units for the burn activity. Bonnie and Nicole will confirm how to donate materials to be used in the burn. Library materials may also be shipped via ILDS.  
  • CARLI/FLVC Summer Digitization Series, Wednesdays at 1pm in June and July
    • June 11, 1:00-2:00 p.m. “Yale’s Digital Collections AI,” Michael Appleby/Jonathan Manton
    • July 2: “Digitization Processes” - Laura Perry, University of Florida

• Other programming:
  • Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection session, potentially in fall, TBD
• Committee collaborating to write a summary report for the 2025 Preservation Survey and members will each write a paragraph about a subtopic. Heidi will edit the entries for overall tone and voice. A draft of the report will be ready by June 20th for discussion at the next meeting.
• Preservation Committee Annual Report due May 30. Bonnie will write.
